How every MP voted on Northern Ireland equal marriage amendment

Find out how your MP voted on an amendment to support equal marriage and legal abortions in Northern Ireland.

The equal rights amendment from Labour backbenchers MPs Stella Creasy and Conor McGinn passed the House of Commons by a vote of 207-117 on Wednesday (October 24), describing Northern Ireland’s ban on same-sex marriage and criminalisation of abortion as a human rights violation.

45 Conservative MPs ultimately voted in favour of the amendment against the government line, alongside 148 Labour MPs, eight Liberal Democrats, four Plaid Cymru MPs, one Green MP and one independent Labour MP.

Although the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland Karen Bradley spoke against the amendment and urged Conservatives to vote against, whips declared a free vote on the issue for Tory MPs due to the strength of opinion on both sides.

Unusually, three Cabinet ministers—Defense Secretary Gavin Williamson, Business Secretary Greg Clark and Minister for Women and Equalities Penny Mordaunt—backed the motion.

Labour’s big-hitters Jeremy Corbyn, Emily Thornberry and Diane Abbott also voted in favour.

102 Conservative MPs, nine Democratic Unionist Party MPs and four Labour MPs rejected the amendment.

Transport Secretary Chris Grayling, former Conservative leader Iain Duncan Smith and rumoured Tory leadership contender Jacob Rees-Mogg were among the big names to vote against the amendment.

Not all MPs voted on the amendment

Of Parliament’s 650 MPs, only 324 MPs voted in this division.

As the motion was a last-minute amendment to an emergency bill that was submitted to Parliament at short notice, many MPs were unable to attend the vote due to prior engagements. Neither of the major parties laid down a whip that would have required their MPs to attend the vote.

The Scottish National Party abstained on the vote. Northern Ireland’s Sinn Féin supports equal marriage but does not take up the seven seats it holds in the House of Commons.

Does a vote against the motion mean an MP opposes LGBT+ rights?

Not necessarily. Northern Ireland Secretary Karen Bradley had urged MPs who otherwise support equal rights to vote against the amendment, because of the principle of devolved government in Northern Ireland.

In addition, MPs who support equal marriage but have objections to abortion may not have felt comfortable casting votes in favour due to the combined nature of the motion.

If you are a constituent and have questions about the way your MP voted, you can always write to them and ask about their decision.

Does this vote mean LGBT+ people in Northern Ireland can get married now?

No. The vote was largely symbolic, but directs the government to issue advice to civil servants in Northern Ireland in relation to the incompatibility of human rights with the region’s laws on the two issues.

You can read more about the details of the amendment here.

A separate backbench bill also from Labour’s Conor McGinn is heading back to Parliament on Friday that would take steps to directly introduce equal marriage, but is not likely to pass without government support.

Why is the UK Parliament voting on laws for Northern Ireland?

The Northern Ireland executive collapsed in January 2017 due to a breakdown in the power-sharing agreement between the DUP and Sinn Féin. The Northern Ireland Assembly and executive have been suspended ever since.

With no future agreement in sight, LGBT+ campaigners in Northern Ireland say the onus is on the UK government and the Irish government to secure an equal marriage settlement. You can read more about that here.
