Halsey laughs off ‘Manic Pixie Dream Girl’ comparison in hilarious Twitter comeback

Halsey

Halsey’s response to someone claiming that she’s a Manic Pixie Dream Girl has proved – yet again – that she’s got the most best comebacks in the biz!

The phrase – coined by film critic Nathan Rabin when referring to Kirsten Dunst’s character in the 2005 film Elizabethtown – is used to mean a fantasy figure who “exists solely in the fevered imaginations of sensitive writer-directors to teach broodingly soulful young men to embrace life and its infinite mysteries and adventures.”

Other well-known examples include Natalie Portman‘s character in Garden State and Zooey Deschanel’s in 500 Days of Summer. Typically, they have quirky styles and, more often than not, tend to feature in romantic dramas.

Knowing this, Twitter user Jeremy (@baldboyblues) took to his social media page to teasingly write: “Legend says, that if you go into your bathroom late at night, light a candle, turn the lights off and say “manic pixie dream girl” 3 times Halsey will appear in the mirror. I’m too scared to try this.”

But somehow, the Bad At Love hitmaker caught wind of the roast and went on to share it with her 9.85m followers, writing alongside it: “And just to make it worse, I’ll appear smoking a cigarette, wearing doc martens, and holding a copy of Just Kids by Patti Smith.”

When a fan replied, asking what the problem is with Doc Martens, Halsey joked back: “Nothing lmao! everything I named is things I love. I’m self aware enough to know when a meme / drag about me is true hahahaha.”

We love a celebrity who is confident enough in themselves to roll with – and seemingly, enjoy – the punches!

That’s not to say that she won’t give someone a well-deserved earful if they truly deserve it that is. Halsey – whose real name is Ashley Nicolette Frangipane – is a dab hand at sticking up for herself and standing up for what she believes in these days.

Just last month, she took to Instagram to clap back at those who were questioning why she posted an throwback image of herself on the cover of PAPER’s Pride issue – (despite being openly bisexual) – because she’s “dating a man.”

In her story, she wrote: “So I posted on my Instagram for National Coming Out Day that I’m out and proud, and everyone’s commenting like, ‘But aren’t you dating G-Eazy?’

So I wanted to take a moment to make a PSA to remind you that — bisexual people. We exist.”

The 24 year-old previously addressed bi-erasure back in December 2017 when she candidly wrote on Twitter: “So if I’m dating a guy I’m straight, and if I date a woman, I’m a lesbian. The only way to be a #True bisexual is to date 2 people at once.”

Halsey doesn’t always concentrate on her sexuality though. More recently, she slammed MTV for nominating her as its ‘woman crush Wednesday’ every week but then snubbing her at the 2018 Video Music Awards. Later, she didn’t attend the ceremony because of that very fact.
