The moment this gay man got his hearing back, his partner proposed

The first words a gay man heard after getting his hearing back were his partner proposing to him, and a video of the touching moment has since gone viral.

After meningitis robbed Louisiana native Hayward Duresseau of his hearing, his long-term boyfriend Kerry Kennedy spent months helping him back to full health and figuring out how to communicate without sound.

Half a year later, Hayward was able to get cochlear implants and switch them on—which was Kerry’s cue to pop the big question, in one of the most heartwarming same-sex proposals of the year.

After Hayward was finally able to hear him, Kerry told his partner: “It’s been kind of a long journey to get this point, but I’m glad that we were able to do it together.

“I want to keep doing these things with you,” he added, as Hayward started to cry, “and helping you as much as I can, because I know you help me.

“So,” he said, getting down on one knee and causing his partner to start full-on sobbing, “will you marry me?”

“Yes,” came the joyful answer, to which his partner said: “I’m so happy you can hear.”

“I’m happy I can hear you!” said Hayward. “Wow!”

Underneath the video on Facebook, Kerry wrote a loving note to his new fiancé, saying: “It’s been six months since you lost your hearing to meningitis.

“These have been some of the most challenging months of our lives, but we made it together. Today your cochlear implant was turned on for the first time.

“For the first time in 6 months, you were able to hear me, and I knew exactly what I wanted to ask you. When you said ‘Yes’ today, that made all the challenges worth it.

“I can’t wait to spend the rest of my life with you. I love you, Hayward Duresseau.”

In July, the world was treated to another adorable proposal when a police officer in New Zealand surprised his boyfriend by popping the question during his graduation from the police academy.

Constable Erik Meechan of Hawke’s Bay took the opportunity to surprise his partner of five years, Matty Judd — who said yes.

And in April, The Voice Australia made history by playing host to the TV franchise’s first-ever same-sex marriage proposal.

Contestant Nathan Brake wanted to make the most of his time in front of the judges, so after he successfully performed his song, he called his unsuspecting boyfriend of six years, Mitchell Baines, on to the stage.

Brake, 26, then went down on one knee and asked for his partner’s hand in marriage. Baines, thankfully, said yes.
