What is new on Netflix? October’s top picks, including Sabrina and Making a Murderer

Claire Toureille September 30, 2018

Kiernan Shipka as Sabrina (Netflix)

October is upon us, and it wouldn’t be complete without a slew of uber-cool Netflix releases. Here are the ones you should definitely keep an eye out for.

Netflix original series

Banking on its own original content, the streaming giant is doubling down on Netflix Originals. You’ll soon be able to enjoy the third season of Marvel’s Daredevil and a second season of Big Mouth.

Expect new seasons of Great News and Gotham, too!

Gotham season 4 is coming to Netflix in October (Netflix)

Netflix is also premiering new original shows, the biggest of which has to be the Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, which is based on a darker version of the 90s sitcom Sabrina the Teenage Witch.

Chilling Adventures take place in the same universe as Riverdale, and was intended to work as its CW sister series, however, it moved to Netflix with two seasons ordered.

Yesss, Daredevil is coming back for a third season (Netflix)

The platform made a wave when it announced a second season of Making a Murderer would hit its platform at the end of October. The true crime documentary fascinated audiences (and single handedly revived the true crime genre) when it came out in late 2015.

This season promises new answers regarding the case of Steven Avery and will focus on his effort to gain back his freedom and clean his name. In a trailer for the new season, one can hear a woman saying: “Once somebody is convicted, they have to move mountain to get out of prison.” This new dive into the case of Avery is set to be as gut-wrenching and gripping as the first take.

Comedies

From true-crime to true-laughter, the platform will also be adding a series of stand up specials and comedies like Kevin Hart: Seriously Funny and Monty Python’s Life of Brian as well as Zack and Miri Make a Porno.

Fans of RuPaul’s Drag Race will be pleased to know hat Netflix is also debuting a docu-series next month, which will focus on the one and only Alyssa Edwards. Alyssa will star in the documentary Dancing Queen which will follow her as she juggles managing her dancing studio and being a drag queen.

Halloween fever

The Shining is coming to Netflix October 1. (Warner Bros)

Netflix is adding classics to its lineup this month with The Neverending Story and Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves, The Green Mile and Blade, but it’s also doubling down on original movies, and especially horror movies.

It wouldn’t be October with a myriad of horror films to binge (or avoid) and Netflix is On. It.

On top of adding cult movies like The Shining, it will also be releasing new movies like Creeped Out, Haunted, Malevolent and Apostle, which promise to raise a few hairs on your arms.

Bye, bye

The Babadook is leaving Netflix next month (Entertainment One)

Following the sad rule of Netflix, as new shows come in, some need to leave. Here are the show leaving the platform in October.

Say goodbye to Freaks and Geeks, the show starring James Franco and Seth Rogen. Also on the way out, Secret Life of Pets, The BFG, The Badabook and Bridget Jones’s Baby, so get to binging if you want one last chance at watching those.
