Singer Sam Smith has opened up about his break-up from 13 Reasons Why actor Brandon Flynn, saying it’s “still quite raw.”

The four-time Grammy Award winner dated Flynn for around nine months from late 2017 to June 2018, but deleted all trace of the actor on Instagram following their split.

In an interview with The Sunday Times’ Style magazine, Smith said: “Brandon was wonderful. I’m still trying to figure out what I took from that relationship and what it meant to me. It’s still quite raw.

“All my relationships have ended in a nice way, never nasty,” said Smith.

The 26-year old star, who is currently on tour following the release of his second album The Thrill of It All in November, added that he wanted to keep details of the pair’s relationship private.

However, he highlighted that “seeing gay relationships [in a public way] is important and refreshing. You don’t see it loads.”

The musician, who said he is focusing on his career instead of a new relationship, also told the magazine that he isn’t on any dating apps, and instead meets people “out and about” or “under the disco balls.”

Following Smith and Flynn’s split in June, a source close to Smith told The Sun: “Sam and Brandon had a real whirlwind romance. They really fell for each other.

“But they are both so busy with their careers and unfortunately things just haven’t worked out. Sam is obviously devastated.”

Flynn posted a tribute to Smith on the singer’s birthday in May, writing: “He’s in a different time zone and it’s hit his birthday! Just finishing his European leg of his tour, at 26 he’s accomplished so much. He’s an angel!

“He makes me so f***ing happy and I hope everyone goes and shares all the birthday love, it ain’t easy getting old but he’s doing it with grace thank you for everything, Samuel!”

In April, Smith spoke out about battling anxiety and revealed he had quit drinking in order to look after his mental health.

Smith publicly came out as gay in May 2014 and has since been an outspoken supporter of LGBT+ rights.

He released his debut album In the Lonely Hour in May 2014.

In March, Smith posted a tribute to the SSE Hydro in Glasgow, where he had just performed, after the arena was lit up in rainbow lights.
