Bodyguard Series 2: Will there be another season of BBC drama?

If you finished Bodyguard last night, you must understandably be yearning for the BBC to release a new season of its gripping drama.

Do not despair, for a second season of Bodyguard is definitely something its creator, Jed Mercurio, would like to work on.

This article mentions major plot points for the finale of the BBC’s Bodyguard. Proceed with caution.

Unanswered questions

The season finale of Bodyguard answered some of its fans questions but left a trail of loose ends that could possibly be solved in a second season. On the set of This Morning, Stuart Bowman, who plays the director of the MI-5, Stephen Hunter-Dunn, said that “[Hunter-Dunn] is implicated. He can talk his way out of prison.”

Co-star Stephanie Hyam, who plays Chanel Dyson in the series said a second season would be “cool anyways. ”

A waiting game

Discussing a possible second season, Mercurio told BBC Radio 1 that “the broadcaster holds all the cards,” which means it’d be the BBC’s call.

“We know that people out there are loving series one and that there would be an appetite for series two, but we’ll just have to wait and see,” he said.

The first episode drew about 10 millions viewers to the channel.

When it comes to the bodyguard himself, David Budd, aka Richard Madden, Mercurio also has some concerns about his leading man’s schedule: “He’s the genuine article, a real leading man. And I think this role has put him very much in the spotlight for bigger things.”

A licence to kill?

In other words, Madden could soon be too big a star and simply too busy to find time to shoot a Season 2 for Bodyguard: Some already imagine him as the next James Bond.

While he is the current favourite to play 007, he’ll have to compete against titans like Idris Elba, Tom Hardy and Tom Hiddleston.

“The practicality may be that we have to work round his availability, if we are lucky enough to get him back,” Mercurio said.

However, it seems like Mercurio wouldn’t consider re-casting the role or make a season about another bodyguard.

The creator added that he would not kill Budd mid-season if a second season were to happen, as this would leave “a massive plot hole,” in the series’ narrative.

Only time will tell whether fans’ wishes will be granted.
