Mary Poppins Returns trailer has landed and fans are going wild

The final trailer for Mary Poppins Returns has landed, and Disney fans are going wild.

The sequel, which stars Emily Blunt as the world’s most famous nanny, shows Michael and Jane Banks together, but this time they are all grown up and even have children of their own.

Sadly, however, the trailer also shows that Michael’s wife has died, and he is on the brink of losing the family home.

It is this that prompts Blunt’s Mary Poppins to fly in – but this time, she lands with one of the children’s kites instead of on her trademark umbrella.

She reveals that she came to “look after the Banks children” – which apparently means both Michael and Jane as well as their own children.

The trailer also gives a brief glimpse of Blunt singing, in a move that will have fans going wild to see how she performs the film’s musical numbers.

It is not the first time Blunt has sang on screen. She previously sang in Disney’s musical fantasy film Into The Woods, which was released in 2014.

Mary Poppins Returns also looks set to draw on inspiration from the original film’s animated sequence, where the family are drawn into a cartoon by Mary Poppins.

Its all-star cast includes Meryl Streep, Ben Whishaw, Emily Mortimer, Lin-Manuel Miranda, Julie Walters, Colin Firth and Dick Van Dyke, with Angela Lansbury even making an appearance.

Like the original, the film is based on the world that was created by author P.L Travers, and is set in 1930s London around 25 years after the events of the original film.

When it is released, there will have been 54 years between the original film and the sequel, making it the longest gap between sequels for live-action films in history.

The original Mary Poppins film was released in 1964 to critical acclaim, and went on to become a Disney classic. Julie Andrews even won the coveted Best Actress Academy Award for her role as the magical nanny.

When the sequel was announced, director Rob Marshall revealed that he had discussed the possibility of Julie Andrews appearing in the film with the star.

He said that Andrews loves Emily Blunt and wanted it to be her show, saying she didn’t want people to be distracted by the original Mary Poppins turning up.

In an interview with the Advocate last year, Julie Andrews revealed that she has “always” been supportive of the LGBT+ community.

“I have to say, though, in my hometown, in my community, I was very aware of bias and bigotry, and couldn’t understand it,” Andrews continued.

“I was raised not to be that way and not to think that way, and it always seemed puzzling to me that the world wasn’t just embracing human beings.

“But it’s never been something that I stumbled on.”

Mary Poppins Returns will be released in cinemas on December 19.
