Yeah, sex is cool, but this meme is better

Sex is extremely popular across the world – but some experiences are superior, according to a meme which has swept the internet.

The premise is beautifully simple – use the phrase: “Yeah, sex is cool, but” and fill in the sentence with one or more sensations which are, in your opinion, better than sex.

Earlier this week, the hilariously painful “Me during sex: hurt me” meme took over our timelines, so perhaps it was time for some feel-good humour.

The meme seemingly sprang into existence in 2013, but has risen in popularity recently, spawning some fantastic queer-centric versions.

One person wrote simply: “Yeah sex is cool but have u tried gay sex,” which is fair enough, to be honest.

Another went a little deeper by delving into personal events, writing: “yeah sex is great but have you ever: -taken gay pictures -slow danced and stared into each other’s eyes.

“-Smile a big goofy smile while you’re awkwardly dancing with each other -laid on the hardwood floor under a too small blanket and cuddled and told them how much you love them.”

Considering how much those images warm our hearts, they may well be right.

In a similar vein, one contributor said: “yeah sex is cool or whatever but have you ever been gay and worn a jacket that smells like your girlfriend?”

And yet another adorable post read: “yeah sex is cool but have you ever had a girlfriend who writes you gay erotica of your favourite fictional characters perfectly tailored to all your weird and embarrassing tastes?”

Other tweeters thought that LGBT+ visibility, respect and representation was better than making love, and it’s hard to argue with them.

Another wrote: “Yeah sex is great but have you tried smiling at a gay couple in the street and they smile back at you because they know and for a second you share the secret of the LGBT lobby.”

A contributor tweeted: “Yeah sex is cool and all but respecting pansexual and bisexual people is cooler,” which is undeniably true.

And another person said: “yeah sex is cool but have you ever passed by a really gorgeous girl and your gay heart stops beating and you’re having asphyxiation and you can’t wait till you spill this to your friends.”

As is the case with pretty much every meme, fandoms have been all over this one, injecting it with their different brands of enthusiasm.

Another said, less specifically: “yeah, sex is great and all but have you ever had your fave actor confirm your gay otp as canon and say shipping it is a badge of honour???”

A contributor who is clearly a follower of Netflix’s Voltron: Legendary Defender tweeted: “yeah sex is cool but imagine waking up with the knowledge that shiro is canonically gay.”

The latest season of the cartoon has revealed that Shiro – one of the superhero paladins who come together to make the gigantic, evil-fighting Voltron – is gay and has an ex-boyfriend.

And another fan wrote: “yeah sex is cool but rosa diaz is a canon bisexual latina on a major network sitcom” in reference to the character on Brooklyn Nine-Nine who came out last year.

From the gender-neutral big dick energy to the proliferation of bisexual lighting all over your screens, 2018 – or, more accurately, #20GayTeen – has been an excellent year for queer memes.

Last month also saw the rise and fall of the hilarious ‘days without sex’ meme.

And the endlessly gratifying “I’m straight, I’m bi, I’m gay” meme became ubiquitous on Twitter in May.
