‘Summer penis’ is a real thing, and it’s happening now

People with penises have been noticing that they’re bigger in the heat of summer – and it seems like they’re right.

The phenomenon, known as ‘summer penis,’ has been affecting penis-havers all over the UK, whatever they call their tool.

It was brought to wider attention by MEL Magazine, and seems to be down to increased blood flow in hotter temperatures.

Dudley Danoff, a urologist who wrote The Ultimate Guide to Male Sexual Health, said the trend was real – when people with penises are erect.

“The non-erect penis is so variable in size from day to night, that it’s probably more of an optical illusion than real if we’re talking about flaccid,” said Danoff.

“But there is an anatomical and physiological explanation for the summer months, and warmer weather versus, say, the Klondike.”

He explained: “The warmer the ambient environment, the more the blood vessels dilate, and the warmth allowing vasodilation increases blood flow.

“So if we think of the penis as these two sausage casings that fill with blood, and the one channel that carries the urine, then the sausage casing will swell and expand to its genetic limit depending on the volume of blood.

“The increased blood flow will increase, and the corpora [the erectile tissue] will be expanded, and the penis will be ‘larger.’ But I don’t think it holds true in the flaccid state. There would be no explanation for that.”

Danoff continued: “Your penis can’t get any larger when the corpora are filled to max. But it’s more likely they will be filled to the max in a warm environment than a cold environment.

“In ideal conditions, in a warm environment, and with appropriate stimulation, assuming arterial factors are in order (no diabetes, or old age, or neuropathy [nerve damage]), warm weather will help you achieve maximum filling.”

So while it’s not the case that penises magically grow when it’s hot and sweaty outside, they are able to show off their true potential.

As far as Danoff – and, we assume, many people all over the world – was concerned, this was “a cause for cheering.

“There’s a reason why people don’t take honeymoons to the North Pole. They go to Hawaii. There’s a reason why a hot tub is attractive for romance.”

The phenomenon of a ‘summer penis’ goes back to at least 2009, when a man called Keiran told the Evening Standard: “I’m bigger in the summer.”

And evidence of people with penises experiencing growth in the heat can be found all over Twitter, even as far back as the halcyon days of 2011, when a pioneer wrote: “I swear my penis looks bigger in the summer.”

Another commented: “my penis is bigger in the summer” in 2012.

“One of my favourite things about summer is that because its always warm my penis constantly looks bigger #TinyWhenItsCold,” wrote one person with a penis.

Another tweeter reported in 2013 that her father had unfortunately revealed the phenomenon to her, writing: “‘What is six inches bigger in summer?”A penis.’ This is why I don’t play trivia games with my Dad.”

“The best thing about summer is that your penis is bigger when flaccid,” said another tweeter.

Just last year, another person wrote: “I explained to my wife the penises have seasons too. She was wondering why it looked bigger. I told her it is summer penis.”

Earlier this year, it was revealed that people have been lying about their penis size for decades – but only because measuring yourself leads to an inaccurate result.

A study last year showed where you can find the biggest penises – on average – in Britain.
