A Cats film has been announced, starring Taylor Swift and James Corden – and the responses have been pretty damning.

Sir Ian McKellen and Jennifer Hudson will also star in the cinematic adaptation of the fourth-longest-running show in Broadway history, with Hudson taking on the role of Grizabella and Sir Ian playing Old Deuteronomy.

The news comes in the same week it was announced that a DC film is set to feature a lesbian superhero for the first time in the company’s history and The CW is developing a show starring a lesbian Batwoman.

But this latest revelation from Universal – the studio behind the Les Miserables film – did not attract the same amount of praise.

In fact, people rushed to condemn the decision to cast Corden – who starred in musical film Into The Woods – and Swift, who doesn’t seem to have any musical experience.

One person wrote: “I can’t imagine Taylor not playing the white cat lol also yes Cats is absolutely horrible and this movie will be trash.”

“‘JENNIFER HUDSON JAMES CORDEN & TAYLOR SWIFT CAST IN MOVIE MUSICAL BASED ON CATS’ is a staggering headline today that I simply cannot unsee,” was another comment that represented a popular sentiment online.

Another critic said: “Resident cat lady Taylor Swift starring in the film adaptation of Cats is not surprising but: 1) Why is this being made…. nobody was CHECKING for a film version of Cats.

“Are you trying to ruin my childhood?” asked one tweeter (ANGELA WEISS/AFP/Getty)

“2) Taylor doesn’t even have the vocal range for Cats. 3) Cats is the worst fucking musical ever made.”

For context, Swift has two cats, Meredith and Olivia, named after fictional badass women Meredith Grey and Olivia Benson.

One person wrote: “So I just found out the are remaking the cats musical movie. First, why?! Second, who cast Taylor Swift? Are you trying to ruin my childhood .”

Another commented: “One of the characters in Cats is named “Victoria the White Cat” and if there is a more accurate description of Ms. Taylor Swift, I haven’t read it!”

That seems fair, to be honest.

“I sincerely cannot believe they’re doing this,” another person tweeted.

Yep, we’re stunned too.
