RuPaul’s Drag Race‘ stars have been asked about the emotional pressure of competing in the show, and if they get pushed too far.

The Advocate asked queens on the red carpet for the finale of season 10 to discuss the issue.

Monique Heart, who competed in Season 10, said: “I mean like you’re in prison almost – you can’t speak to the outside world. Your cell phone’s gone which is a major thing in today’s society and the people that you would normally draw strength from, you can’t.”

Dusty Ray Bottoms also admitted that she felt the pressure: “I cried nearly everyday of Drag Race off camera. I cried on camera,” the queen said. “That’s something that is out of my character, but you know I was there. I was under these floodlights, I was strung out on Redbull,” she continued.

Miz Cracker who came fourth on the show, talked about her struggle: “We signed up to the triathlon for the soul. It broke me down into parts, and I put them back together into something else.”

But some of the other queens from the season didn’t agree. The Vixen commented: “I never felt pushed emotionally by the show, I mean it’s a competition. It’s a lot of work I mean you’ve got to be ready.”

Aquaria, a finalist on the season said that the show only helped her build experience: “I know a lot of people have this perception that RuPaul is pushing us out of our comfort zones a little too far. As someone who is trying to grow as a performer, as a human, as an entertainer, you need to be kind of humbled.”

While Monet X Change said: “On drag race you feel the pressure to be 100% all of the time and then when you don’t quite make it there, you feel knocked down a peg.”

The finale of ‘RuPaul’s Drag Race’ season 10 is on Thursday evening.
