Gay Men’s Chorus of Los Angeles concert evacuated over bomb threat

Nick Duffy June 24, 2018

A bomb threat forced the evacuation of a Gay Men’s Chorus of Los Angeles concert – that was set to star Will & Grace’s Beverley Leslie.

The popular gay men’s choral group had been set to perform a concert at the Alex Theatre in Glendale on Saturday (June 23) to a crowd of 600 people.

However the event was just getting underway when a bomb threat forced the evacuation of the building.

The group confirmed: “GMCLA’s 2pm performance of The Pink Carpet has been interrupted by a bomb threat! Out of an abundance of caution, the theatre has been evacuated.

“In our near 40 year history we do not believe this has happened until today. Everyone is safe. WE WILL NOT BE DETERRED.”

The entire area was cordoned off as police brought in bomb squads and search teams.

Leslie Jordan, who plays Beverley Leslie on Will & Grace, was reportedly on stage at the time of the threat.

GMCLA executive director Jonathan Weedman told the LA Times: “The good news is that everybody is safe, and the Glendale Police Department is sweeping the theatre.”

“This is a difficult time for the LGBTQ community, and we will not be deterred. The show must go on, and our message [of inclusiveness] will continue.”

Police cleared the venue at 4:30 pm, two and a half hours after the concert was scheduled to begin. An evening performance went ahead.

One witness recalled: “We are attending this concert… I have never ever been in a situation like this. This appears to be hoax, but in today’s world one never knows. Very sad.”

Another added: “We will be back tonight. Let all your friends know that seats are still available for performance tonight and tomorrow. Fill the theatre to standing room only and show support for the performers and organisation. Stand against this kind of B.S.”

A description for the event states: “Hollywood has portrayed and influenced cultural beliefs since the early days of silent films. For decades, film-makers have perpetuated gay and lesbian stereotypes, pushing the boundaries of social norms, blurring the lines of gender roles, and creating ground-breaking queer films.

“In GMCLA’s summer concert event, The Pink Carpet, we highlight many of the iconic films that have depicted LGBTQ culture.

“We’re joined by Emmy Award-winning actor, comedian, and LGBTQ activist Leslie Jordan for an unforgettable experience. Bring family and friends, and we’ll skip down the Pink Carpet together!”
