The seven personality types most likely to cheat revealed

Having a partner cheat is not only heartbreaking, it can also make you plunge into a pit of despair and self-doubt… if only there was a way to detect whether someone was likely to do the dirty.

Well, according American psychiatrist Dr Kenneth Paul Rosenberg there is.

And in his new book Infidelity: Why Men and Women Cheat, Rosenberg reveals the seven personality traits that increase someone’s chances of cheating.

In an extract published on MailOnline, Dr Rosenberg says that the biggest motivation for cheating is that the person “feels they’re entitled or that they deserve to to cheat,” and there are certain characteristics that are associated with this feeling.

They are:

Narcissism —feeling self-entitled and putting yourself first
Lacking empathy — not being able to understand or share the feelings of another
Grandiosity — an unrealistic sense of superiority and sustained view that you are better than others, especially when it comes to sexual prowess
Being impulsive — making decisions with big consequences very suddenly
Being a novelty or thrill seeker
Having an avoidant attachment style — fearing commitment
Being self-destructive or masochistic

And while being able to identify these traits in someone is the good(ish) news, the bad news is that anyone can be a love rat.

The doctor, who has more than 20 years of experience, states that there are three determinants of cheating – brain chemistry, psychology and culture; meaning that no one group of people is more or less susceptible to it.

While there are certain characteristics and sociological factors that can make someone cheat, any sexual orientation and age is capable of it (pexels)

He writes: “My patients struggling with infidelity come from a variety of social circumstances and situations—they have different sexual orientations, are at different ages, and come from many religious, racial, and socioeconomic backgrounds.

“They are millennials who engage in cybersex and have come of age with internet porn, first-date sex, and friends with benefits. They are women and men in the midst of midlife crises who fear dwindling opportunities in sex as well as in life in general.

“They also include the elderly, who are living longer and healthier than ever, confronting changes in their bodies and their desires but enjoying the benefits of drugs and treatments that can enhance their sex lives.”

Narcissists and those who lack empathy are among those most likely to do the dirty on a partner  (pexel)

Meanwhile, it was recently revealed that most gay men have cheated on their loved one, according to a provocative new study.

Health Equality and Rights Organisation (HERO) found that 58 percent of gay men have been cheated on by their same-sex partner, while 52 percent admit to cheating themselves.

If the stats come as a surprise, it could be because you never found out – 45 percent say their other half never knew they played away.

Good luck out there.
