Singer Starley explains why she chose the bisexual flag for her new single Love Is Love

Up-and-coming Australian singer Starley has used the colours of the bisexual flag for the cover art of her new single, “Love Is Love.”

Starley, best known for her 2016 single “Call On Me,” explained she had chosen the artwork as the song relates to her own personal journey.

“The cover for ‘Love is Love’ is not to be about me. Although, this song is my personal story, it’s a song for everyone, so I felt like a heart was the perfect way to go,” she said.

“The plot twist is that the colours I chose are the very colours of the bisexual flag. I feel like there should be a flag that represents love in all forms – interracial, interfaith, gay, straight, bisexual, trans, and so on.

“Until that exists, I’ve chosen to use the colours of the bisexual flag because they relate to my personal journey,” Starley added.

The artist said the track was a “very personal” song.

“’Love Is Love’ is a very personal song for me. I had written a first draft for it that had a lot less detail,” she said.

“After sharing it with a few friends, it seemed it wasn’t hitting home all the way, and I realised it was because I was leaving out the parts of the story I felt uncomfortable sharing.

“I decided to re-write it and dig deeper. That felt scary and liberating at the same time. From that process Love Is Love was born. I’m nervous and excited to share it with the world!”

Starley, who recently performed at the BuzzFeed Queer Prom in New York, is set to release her album at the end of the year.

Speaking to Billboard last year, Starley said she had struggled with “knock backs” in her career when she was younger.

“Record labels would tell me to straighten my hair or lose weight, and it was a bit too much to me as a young kid having an impressionable mind at the time,” she said.

After working as a songwriter for Sony/ATV, Starley decided to give her own singing career another go by writing “Call On Me.”

“I kind of knew [‘Call On Me’] was special when I was writing it. It was really ironic — just when I wanted to leave and everything, and then I wrote a song that changed my life,” she said.

“Because it’s an uplifting song, I want it to reach as many people as possible. So if that’s the one that does it, I’ve only got to be embracing it and be happy,” Starley added.

“Especially when I went through those emotions and other people are connecting with that and they’re using it for positivity in their life, I couldn’t ask for anything more.”
