Talk show hosts says boy band BTS ‘look like an LGBT group’ in bizarre video

The host of Mexican talk show Farandula 40 has come under fire after he joked that K-pop group BTS looked like “an LGBT group lost in Cancún,” and “like a group of my female friends who drive trucks.”

Horacio Villalobos made the comments following BTS’s performance at the 2018 Billboard Music Awards in May, according to translations by HuffPost.

The seven-member South Korean boy band played their new single “Fake Love” at the ceremony.

Villalobos also said that the group – made up of Suga, J-Hope, RM, Jimin, V, Jungkook and Jin – “look like they’re onstage at Cabaretito,” a gay bar in Mexico City.

The talk show host was heavily criticised on social media for his remarks.

One Twitter user, tagging the chat show, wrote: “The audacity that you had to comment on BTS fashion in a very xenophobic and disgusting way is absurd to me.

“What you said is very offensive and in no right did you have to talk about them ‘being gay’ solely because they dressed themselves nicely for the award show.”

Another said: “Horacio Villalobos is just some nobody who is both racist and homophobic. Ignore him.”

Villalobos issued an apology on Facebook an a day after the clip aired.

He wrote: “It was never our purpose in our fashion section of Farándula 40 to offend fans of #BTS or anyone. If so, we offer you a sincere apology.”

Last month, BTS’s new album Love Yourself: Tear debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard Top 200 chart – making them the first K-pop band to reach the top of the American chart.

The group told Ellen DeGeneres on her show in May that their appearance at the Billboard Awards was a “dream come true.”

BTS – formed in 2013 – have released three studio albums. As well as Love Yourself: Tear, the other two are Dark & Wild (2014), and Wings (2016).

In April, BTS reportedly unfollowed Kanye West after he made a series of tweets endorsing Trump.

“You don’t have to agree with Trump, but the mob can’t make me not love him,” he wrote.

“We are both dragon energy. He is my brother.”

Other celebrities to have allegedly unfollowed West following his comments included Harry Styles, Katy Perry, Drake, Justin Bieber, Rihanna, Nicki Minaj, Chrissy Teigen, Kendrick Lamar, Lana Del Rey and John Legend.

President Trump responded to several of West’s tweets about him, retweeting one of the posts with the caption: “Thank you Kanye, very cool!”
