Big Bang Theory’s Jim Parsons opens about his ‘very traditional’ marriage with husband
The Big Bang Theory star Jim Parsons opened up about his “traditional” marriage.
Parsons, who is believed to be one of TV’s highest-paid stars for his role on the long-running sitcom, tied the knot to husband Todd Spiewak last year.
The actor, who came out in 2012, opened up about their marriage in an interview with CNN.
Addressing criticism of the TV industry for failing to represent conservatives, Parsons said he agreed with the point.
He said: “Working in the industry I do get the sense that we are surrounded at the creative level by more of the left leaning mindset and heartset than the right-leaning.
“I have always felt that I have so many conservative traits about me. I’m such a family-first type of guy.
“Perhaps I have a more expansive view of family, but as far as its importance, I don’t see that as a left or right type of thing. In my heart I know what I need and it’s the same damn thing that other people need.”
He added of his wedding: “The big deal, which really took me by surprise was how… and this goes to me being a bit of a traditionalist or maybe just human, was how meaningful the day was.
“We did it because it was meaningful, but to actually go through the wedding; to be there in front of all of your loved ones, and your family. It gave such meaning to doing this so people could bear witness to it.
“It meant so much more to me than I was prepared for. Especially having grown up where it wasn’t a possibility, and so it wasn’t a dream.
“I’m thrilled we did it, and it feels so traditional to me, it feels so ‘mom and dad’… but not, obviously!”
Parsons previously said: “I didn’t really think we cared about the act of it that much, to be honest with you.
“And that sounds cold in a way, but I finally thought: ‘Well, let’s have a party then for the celebration … and we’ll go ahead and legalise this thing.’
“I really thought it would end at that – a party feel – but it was so much more meaningful in the moment to me than I predicted.
“And it’s been resonantly more meaningful to me afterward than I ever saw coming.”

He continued: “I’d been an adult gay person for so long at a time when that wasn’t possible that life was ‘fine.’ You know what I mean?
“I don’t know on a specific day-to-day sense what it is. But there is an underlying thing, a little buzz of something. And I keep reminding myself of it.”
He added: “To be in love, to find love in that way, is as close as anything else I’ve found in life that gives me the feeling of being close to God.
“I remember when we first got together – I can’t believe i’m going to go into this – when we first got together I can remember lying in bed, closing my eyes but not being asleep and that sensation of light! Light! Light!
“And I was like, ‘Oh, I don’t know what’s going on exactly, but it feels close to something important, eternal.'”
