Actor Rachel Weisz has defended her ‘beautiful’ lesbian sex scene with Rachel McAdams in her new movie Disobedience.

The film, which portrays a forbidden romance between two Jewish women, features an explicit sex scene between Weisz and McAdams.

Speaking to the Mirror, Weisz defended the choice to include the scene in the movie, describing the moment as “beautiful.”

“Usually there’s little point to sex scenes, but in our story it’s a love scene that’s about freedom,” said Weisz.

And, of her experience working with McAdams, she added: “I’ve never been in a film before where I had so many scenes with another woman and where I was able to connect to a female character in such a close way.”

Disobedience premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival in September last year, and was released in the US last month. It’s set to be released in UK cinemas this November.

The film explores the rekindling of a romance between Esti Kuperman (McAdams) and Ronit Krushka (Weisz), when the latter returns to London following the death of her father.

The two women were brought up in a ultra-Orthodox Jewish community in the capital, and the film looks at the boundaries of faith and sexuality.

The pair had previously had a teenage romance, before they were discovered and Krushka was sent away by the community in response.

It is based on the novel of the same name by Naomi Alderman, who skyrocketed to global fame with the release of The Power.

The film also stars Alessandro Nivola, who plays Kuperman’s husband Rabbi Dovid Kuperman.

As well as acting in Disobedience, Weisz is also credited as a producer for the film.

McAdams has also spoken out in support of the sex scene in the film.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly last month, McAdams said of the clip: “Often, you’re trying to decide if it’s gratuitous or not. But this scene felt so integral to the plot and moving the story forward.

“The characters need this release to open up… There was energy to that scene that I haven’t experienced in any other sex scenes [with men] in my career. There was camaraderie to it.

“We both felt safe and free…. All those things that you love about being a woman, you get to be with [in the scene], so I understand the attraction and appeal to that in a sexual context.”
