Sara Bareilles has caused a storm among fans who thought she was coming out.

The American singer, songwriter and musical composer made what fans thought was a stunning announcement on Twitter on April 30.

It all started when a fan asked their followers about “Love Song,” the track which launched Bareilles to prominence.

In the 2007 track, Bareilles sings about how she would be happy to write a love song – but only if she wants to, not simply because she’s asked to.

“If all you have is leaving I’m gonna need a better reason to write you a love song today,” she explains.

With the song’s lyrics in mind, they wrote: “Would @SaraBareilles be as popular today if she wrote him a love song because he asked for it?”

“Because he needed one?”

The 38-year-old star, who has been nominated for Grammys and Tony Awards, quote-tweeted the post, adding the titillating phrase: “it was never about a he. ”

As one fan correctly put it, now is not the time to be ambiguous.

“You can’t just say things like this in 20Gayteen ❤❤,” they wrote.

Of course, as we all know, 20GayTeen is the best name for this year, courtesy of pop star and – according to her fans – Lesbian Jesus, Hayley Kiyoko.

But after the shock and amazement, an explanation was forthcoming.

As countless Bareilles fans pointed out in the comments – and as the Waitress composer has said herself – the song was really about her frustrations with her record label and its apathetic responses to her creations.

So, as the singer tweeted, the song wasn’t about “a he” – it was about an it instead.

For any music lovers whose hopes were raised before being cruelly dashed, there are plenty of other singers who have come out this year.

Either side of Kiyoko’s proudly lesbian album Expectations being released in March, musicians have publicly declared that they are part of the LGBT community.

In March, Demi Lovato explained her sexuality, saying: “I’m very fluid, and I think love is love.

“You can find it in any gender.

“I like the freedom of being able to flirt with whoever I want.”

In April, Kehlani came out as queer, not long after she kissed Lovato on stage during a concert.

The 22-year-old singer made the announcement after years of public speculation and media reports labelling her as bisexual or a lesbian.

She wrote on Twitter: “cuz i keep geddin asked.. i’m queer. not bi, not straight. i’m attracted to women, men, REALLY attracted to queer men, non binary people, intersex people, trans people. lil poly pansexual papi hello good morning. does that answer your questions? ✨”

The two-time Grammy Award nominee added that “if ur attracted to a man and then change your energy up when you find out he’s sexually ambiguous or queer, thass gross.”

She told followers that “you bout to miss out on some fye s**t.”

On April 26, Janelle Monáe came out as queer.

The 32-year-old singer ended years of rumours by calling herself “a queer black woman” who wasn’t sure if she was bisexual or pansexual, adding: “I’m open to learning more about who I am.”

And also in April, British pop star Anne-Marie revealed that she was attracted to women.

The rising star, who just released her album Speak Your Mind, said: “I’ve never ever just been attracted to men. I’ve never just been attracted to women.

She added: “I’ve never felt the need to tell anyone that I’m bisexual. I don’t feel like I am.

“I just feel like I’m attracted to who I like.”
