Adam Rippon has revealed why he made the iconic decision to wear a tuxedo with a leather harness to the Oscars.

The figure skater had a spectacular Winter Olympics on and off the ice while becoming – as he put it – “America’s sweetheart.”

He won a bronze medal as Eric Radford was becoming the first-ever openly gay man to win a gold medal at the Winter Olympics.

And Rippon took his winning personality to the Oscars, as he stunned onlookers by wearing a leather harness under his tuxedo, with cut-out shoulders.

The figure skater has now told his fans why he chose the outfit, which was designed by the creative director of Moschino, Jeremy Scott.

On Twitter, he wrote: “I think fashion is all about self expression and I chose to wear what I wore on the red carpet because I felt cool AF.

“Everyone should take risks, be bold, and not give a . It’s LOTS of fun.

“Huge thanks to my team for dressing me and make me feel like a sexy MF,” he added, in classic Rippon style.

As well as wearing the harness – which the BBC said “was perhaps a nod to the Fifty Shades franchise” – the skater also fulfilled another dream at the Oscars.

Last week, he said on The Ellen DeGeneres Show that his celebrity crush was Shawn Mendes.

And at the Oscars, he showed that wishes really can come true by posting a picture of him with the Canadian singer.

Above the photo, Rippon wrote, cheekily: “I planted the seed and I saw the harvest. He is cute, he is sweet, and the other guy is @ShawnMendes.”

His Oscars outfit even caught the attention of America’s Next Top Model host Tyra Banks.

Banks tweeted a photo of the outfit, captioning it: “Hoe, but make it fashion.”

Rippon replied to Banks, saying that the model and fashion icon understood his look.

“FASH-HOE-N. YOU JUST GET IT,” he wrote.
