Legends of Tomorrow: Sara Lance and Ava Sharpe’s romance FINALLY became canon and fans love it
*This article contains mild spoilers to Legends of Tomorrow ‘The Curse of the Earth Totem’*
If you’ve been paying attention to Legends of Tomorrow recently – and we’d like to guess you have – then you will have picked up on some serious chemistry between Sara Lance (Caity Lotz) and Ava Sharpe (Jes Macallan). Initially, the Waverider captain and the suited-and-booted Time Bureau agent shared a disdain for one another, what with Sara altering history left-right-and-centre and Ava having to pick up the pieces.
But over time, that contempt manifested into mutual respect and flirtation and fans are pretty thrilled that their romance finally became canon in the twelfth episode of season three.
In ‘The Curse of the Earth Totem,’ we finally saw Sara and Ava go out on a date. An actual sit-down-dinner date; something we haven’t seen in any of the DC TV series for a very long time and yes, it was rather adorable.
Considering how accustomed we are to seeing Sara as the tough leader of the Legends, it was brilliant to see her softer side making an appearance as the pair discussed their pasts. She divulged that she’s still mortified about playing Peter Pan in her elementary school play, while Ava admitted that she never anticipated falling for her.
In true superhero show style though, their evening was interrupted – thanks to Rip Hunter and the team getting into some trouble in 1700s Bahamas – but it was enough to have gleeful fans taking to Twitter to share in their excitement.
Not only has their long-awaited romance – which has been a hot topic of conversation between every member of the Legends for quite a while now – became actualised, the episode was full of memorable moments for Sara and Ava in general.
You only have to have a quick glance on social media to see that viewers particularly enjoyed seeing the uncharacteristically awkward twosome simultaneously pull out chairs for each other on their date and THAT kiss set to some pretty dramatic music.
So cool to see such a mature, fun, complex relationship developing between Sara and Ava (@caitylotz & @jesmacallan) on @TheCW_Legends. The subtle transition of the show to one with such awesome women leads is impressive. I also love the strong friendships btwn women on LEGENDS.

We also liked that they halted their make out session to go kick some pirate butt. Not that the latter was a surprise. After all, it’s pretty clear that neither of them – especially the White Canary – is going to stop putting down bad guys just because they’re crushing on someone.

While her commitment to her duty as a Legend is unlikely to be affected, this blossoming relationship is expected to bring about a welcome change in Sara and that’s her attitude to romance. Throughout her time in the Arrowverse, she has been linked to a number of characters including the Queen of Camelot, a 1950s nurse, Constantine and Supergirl’s Alex. However, many of them were merely dalliances and barely lasted more than an episode or two.
Her only long-standing relationships have been with Star City vigilante Oliver Queen and League of Assassins’ member Nyssa al Ghul, so her actually dating Ava is a big deal. Another reason why fans were so glad to finally see the pair come together is because it was a long-time in the making; a deliberate choice made by those behind the camera to make it clear that this was no fling for Sara.
“When Jes Macallan came in to do her first chemistry read with Caity Lotz, it was evident how great a couple they would make on screen,” executive producer Phil Klemmer recently told Entertainment Weekly.

“But the last thing we wanted to do was to make their relationship come too easily. After two seasons of Sara loving ‘em and leaving ‘em, we wanted to challenge her with something more than a one night stand with some random historical figure of the week; although those are fun too.
“But the real challenge was, for ourselves as writers, to come up with a character worthy of Captain Sara Lance’s romantic interest — dare I say love? Thank God we found a performer like Jes to bring this person to life. I hope that our fans are relieved by the time Sara and Ava sit down for their date on [Monday’s] episode because it was an awful long time coming.”
Of course, fans are also excited simply because romantic relationships between women (and men, for that matter) are still a rarity on mainstream television. Bisexual lead characters, like Sara, are even more of a rarity so it’s always important when representation like this is included and her love life is addressed whether she’s dating a man or a woman.
‘The Curse of the Earth Totem’ is set to air in the UK on Wednesday 14 March on Sky One. Avalance fans, be sure not to miss it!
