Watch: Whoopi Goldberg compares Mike Pence to a Nazi in LGBT+ rights TV debate
Whoopi Goldberg has compared Mike Pence to a Nazi on a talk show when she defended the first openly gay US Winter Olympian’s refusal to meet the Vice President.
Appearing on The View, the actor offered her support to bronze medallist Adam Rippon, who refused to meet Pence on the basis of his anti-gay views and funding of conversion therapy.
“I think it would be like asking a Jewish person to sit down and understand where the Nazi is coming from,” said the actor.
Goldberg then continued to illustrate where the Vice President stands on LGBT+ rights, meditating on the fact that LGB+ people not being allowed to marry is “an enforcement of God’s idea.”
“He says keeping gays from marrying was not discrimination but an enforcement of God’s idea.”
Pence, who has the worst record on LGBT rights of any President or Vice President in recent history, previously suggested that HIV prevention funding be drained in order to fund state-sponsored ‘gay cure’ therapy.
Pence recently insisted that his anti-gay record is “fake news” after he was criticised by gay athletes.

Before he won the medal, Rippon spoke to USA Today about the idea of meeting Pence.
“If it were before my event, I would absolutely not go out of my way to meet somebody who I felt has gone out of their way to not only show that they aren’t a friend of a gay person, but that they think that they’re sick. I wouldn’t go out of my way to meet somebody like that,” said the Olympian.
“I don’t think he has a real concept of reality. To stand by some of the things that Donald Trump has said and for Mike Pence to say he’s a devout Christian man is completely contradictory. If he’s OK with what’s being said about people and Americans and foreigners and about different countries that are being called ‘shitholes,’ I think he should really go to church,” he added.
