Troye Sivan says he’s more sympathetic to ‘misguided’ gay conversion parents after Boy Erased

Tom Halford February 5, 2018

Troye Sivan stars in the upcoming film 'Boy Erased.'

Troye Sivan performed his hit single My My My! on Ellen and sat down to talk about his new gay conversion therapy film, Boy Erased.

Based on a 2016 memoir by Garrad Conley, Sivan joins a star-studded cast including Nichole Kidman and Russel Crowe.

Crowe and Kidman play the parents who send their gay son away to a gay conversion program after he is outed to them.

Sivan told Ellen DeGeneres: “I left the experience with a lot more empathy for parents who send their kids off because think I’ve realised it’s just like, sort of just misguided love.”

“It’s a matter of educating people and that’s what I really really hope this movie is going to help people do,” he added.

“Learn more about it. Realise that it’s been proven to not be effective and hopefully start making changes because it’s still happening all over.”

Ellen pointed out the reality of the issue: “It’s frightening that that actually exists.

“That people are trying to change people from who they are.”

This isn’t the first film set to release this year that’s shining a light on gay conversion therapy.

Chloe Grace Moretz’s film, The Miseducation of Cameron Post won the grand jury prize at the Sundance Film Festival last week.

Since coming out very publicly on YouTube in August 2013, Sivan has been an advocate for LGBT rights.

He released a Pro LGBT music video for his song ‘Heaven’ on Trump’s inauguration day last year.

He’s also spoken about the lack of relatable gay role models he had growing up.

Hoping to be one for younger fans, he encourages them to be unapologetically themselves.

Boy Erased will be in US cinemas from November 28.
