Christmas is a joyous time.

It should be merry.

And happy.

And gay.

If you’re going to be around your family for an extended period of time, with merriment on tap, it is of course best if they appreciate you for who you are.

But either way, it’s wonderful to know that there are other gay people out there celebrating the festivities the right way.

In 2017, we’ve appreciated the delights of #BiTwitter and #PanTwitter, an outpouring of joy, love and hilarious reminders that pansexual doesn’t mean an attraction to kitchenware.

One hashtag sure to light up even the Grinch’s face was #BlackGaySlay, the beautiful queer celebration of Black History Month.

There was also #LGBTbabes, which saw photos come in from celebrities and fans alike, with LGBT youth climbing on board with all your favourite out famous people.

Let’s not forget the glorious day of #itsthelgbt, the hashtag which said: “We’re here, we’re proud, and we look amazing, dammit.”

And because we can’t just have nice things as a species, June brought us the horror of #HeterosexualPrideDay, a hashtag born from the misplaced idea that cisgender, straight (cishet) people are oppressed.

Normalcy was resumed in October, when #InternationalLesbianDay took the internet by storm, when people flooded Twitter with happiness and pride over being lesbians.

And what a way for people to round out the year – by celebrating Christmas in all their rainbow glory via the hashtag #gaychristmas.

There’s no better way to do that than coming out when you feel comfortable and safe to do so.
