A gay couple in Poland has made a Christmas song out of the homophobic abuse they received in the last year.

Polish journalist Jakub Kwienciński and his partner David had a challenging 2017 as they were targeted with horrific homophobic abuse after they publicly came out as gay.

The pair made a lip-sync video to a Roxette song celebrating their love.

However, it was picked up by homophobic media in Poland and they were sent vile abuse and death threats.

The couple was told to “cut their throats”, whilst other said that they wanted to “send them to the gas chamber”.

They also received private messages on their Facebook accounts with people telling them “your neighbours will come after you” and “you two should be burnt at the stake like witches. Go to hell”.

However, the pair prevailed as the hate they encountered meant that their dreams of marriage became a reality as they were granted special permission to tie the knot in Madeira, Portugal.

The couple had tried to get permission to marry on the island but were initially rejected as they lacked the appropriate documents which caused the rejection, but it was because Polish authorities had made it difficult to obtain the necessary documents.

After facing the unprecedented homophobia, the local registry office re-considered their documents because they were shocked at the couple’s treatment.

Jakub said that the whole journey was like “winning a war”.

Now, they have marked the end of 2017 with one more lip sync video featuring 30 of their LGBTQ+ friends from Poland.

The song starts with some of the abuse the pair received, as well as homophobic remarks made by Polish politicians and pseudo-scientists about the LGBTQ community.

“This rainbow is a symbol of perfection”. “it’s beastiality, debasement, barren relationship” and “they need to be cured” all start the song.

It then launches into a proper Christmas anthem that lives up to the title – “Love us for Christmas”.

Despite the groups best effort to put a positive spin on the negatives of 2017, mainstream media in Poland have once again sparked abuse.

It is being criticised for being too “erotic” and for featuring a child – who is the son of one of the couples featured.

The song has also been called a “Christmas desecration”.
