The two characters made their debut in Star Wars: The Force Awakens in 2015, prompting rumours and speculation of a relationship between the two characters.

In the Collider interview, Issac addressed the impact of representation and said that he’s open to playing a gay character, but there won’t be one in Star Wars yet.

Issac said: “Well what it means to me is that people can see themselves in a hero like this, in a movie like this, which I love.

“Not only LGBT [fans] but Latinos… there’s a representation out there for that.”

He continued: “As to actually seeing how that manifests in Poe – that isn’t necessarily going to be a clear story point in [The Last Jedi].

“But as an actor I’m very open to those possible storylines and I don’t think it needs to be nailed down in any kind of traditional way.”

“I think it’s very subtle romance that’s happening,” Issac told the host, refusing to specify which characters is talking about.

“You know, you have to just look very close — you have to watch it a few times to see the little hints. But there was.”

The Star Wars Universe does feature gay characters, with author Chuck Wending facing significant criticism for his inclusion of a gay character in the Star Wars tie-in novel Star Wars:Awakening.

However, fans are yet to see an LGBT character in the film series, of which The Last Jedi will be the ninth chapter.
