Actor Ezra Miller has revealed that he was told he’d done “a silly thing” in coming out as queer in the public eye.

In an interview with Shortlist, the actor famed for his roles in The Perks of Being A Wallflower said that he was warned against coming out.

The actor, who decided to come out in 2012, said that after his interview in Out Magazine, he was told that he’d “made a mistake.”

“I was told, when I gave that interview [that] I’d made a mistake,” he said to Shortlist.

“Folks in the industry, folks outside the industry. People I’ve never spoken to. They said there’s a reason so many gay, queer, gender-fluid people in Hollywood conceal their sexual identity, or their gender identity in their public image.”

“I was told I had done a ‘silly’ thing in … thwarting my own potential to be a leading man,” he added.

“I was given a lot of stern talking-tos.”

However, as Miller has proved, his sexuality has not affected his impressive career in the industry.

Since 2012, Miller has taken on impressive roles in the likes of Suicide Squad and Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them.

“I know a lot of people who are in the closet,” he said.

“It’s all good. It’s OK. This is what I want to say… it would be a good idea to re-examine how this is working for us. These ideas. These values. Is it really working for us? Honestly?”

“I’m queer. I have a lot of really wonderful friends who are of very different sexes and genders. I am very much in love with no-one in particular,” said Miller in the original interview in 2012.

Miller also said that the film industry is still “incredibly whitewashed”.

“We’re not seeing a lot of queer or trans people of colour in films – everything is still incredibly whitewashed,” said Miller to the publication.
