Sam Smith to donate profits from Australia show to same-sex marriage campaign

Sam Smith has weighed in on Australia’s same-sex marriage debate with a plan to raise tens of thousands of dollars.

The multi-platinum selling artist has urged Australian voters to support the ‘yes’ side of the debate in recent weeks.

Now he’s putting his money where his mouth is with a major new pledge.

The 25-year-old Too Good At Goodbyes singer is to to donate a third of the profits from his Sydney Opera House show on 16 January.

Australian Marriage Equality co-chair Janine Middleton said: “Sam knows all too well about the challenges faced by LGBTI Australians and his generosity towards them will help us achieve fairness and equality for all.

“Sam doesn’t need to do this, he isn’t Australian but he understands what it feels like to be in a relationship that isn’t considered equal.

“Soon we hope to realize the equality he enjoys at home in the United Kingdom will soon be a reality here in Australia,” she said.

Last week he appeared on breakfast TV show Today to discuss his life and upcoming second album.

While on the show he blasted the government or holding the marriage equality survey.

Sam told the presenters: “We shouldn’t be having this discussion in 2017.”

He added: “But it it great that it is happening. Yeah, I’m so happy.”

Taking to Twitter a few weeks earlier, Sam asked for Australians to “change things for the better” in the vote.

He wrote: “Can’t believe my eyes. ‘Vote No’ being written in the sky over Sydney from people against equal marriage.”

He was reacting to an anti-equal marriage display that drew ‘vote no’ in the sky earlier this week.

In a follow-up tweet he wrote: “Come on beautiful Australia…. Let’s change things for the better. LOVE LOVE LOVE is LOVE.”

Australia is currently voting in a non-binding plebiscite on same-sex marriage.

The pro-equality ‘yes’ side is thought to be currently in the lead, but even if Australia does back the change, it may not lead to any amendments in the law.

Sam doesn’t have plans to wed any time soon, though, after revealing his new single is about a break-up.

However he seems to be on the rebound as he was recently photographed kissing 13 Reasons Why star Brandon Flynn.
