‘It’s irrelevant’ – Demi Lovato refuses to give us any answers about her sexuality in new interview

Demi Lovato hit the news last week when she was spotted by a fan holding hands with a woman at Disneyland, sparking rumours about her sexuality.

The woman she was with is believed to be DJ and producer Lauren Abedini.

Many fans were extremely excited by the photo, some saying that Lovato was a big part of their own realisation of their sexuality.

But in an interview with Pride Source this weekend, Lovato straight up refused to address the curiosity, saying she wanted to keep her private life to herself as it was “irrelevant to her music.

When she was asked why, as an LGBT advocate, she didn’t want to speak about her sexuality, Lovato said “I just feel like everyone’s always looking for a headline and they always want their magazine or TV show or whatever to be the one to break what my sexuality is.”

“I feel like it’s irrelevant to what my music is all about. I stand up for the things that I believe in and the things that I’m passionate about, but I like to keep my personal life as private as possible when it comes to dating and sexuality and all that stuff just because it has nothing to do with my music.”

“Unfortunately, we live in a world where everyone is trying to get that soundbite and I am purposefully not giving the soundbite.”

However, she did heavily hit that there may be more information in her documentary ‘Demi Lovato: Simply Complicated,’ which is coming out on YouTube on October 12th.

She said if she was going to talk about sexuality, she wanted to do it in her own terms.

This is far from the first time the singer has dodged questions on the subject.

Last year she told People magazine, “It’s something I don’t think needs to have a label: As humans, It’s just about a connection with someone.”

When asked by Alan Carr if her song ‘Cool for the Summer,’ which includes lyrics such as “Got a taste for the cherry I just need to take a bite,” was about lesbian sex, Lovato said “I’m not confirming, and I’m definitely not denying,” but that she didn’t think there was anything wrong with experimenting.

However in this most recent interview, Lovato said the song was just supposed to be about fun and “bi-curiosity,” and that people reading into it needed to “chill the f*ck out.”

She faced criticism, in particular from openly bisexual singer Halsey, for using the narrative of bisexuality as a taboo to sell records.

Lovato did say she felt really honoured to have such a big LGBT following, saying that it was “unbelievable and powerful,” when gay fans told her they were inspired to come out by her music.

However she hit out at people who pander to the gay community to try and become a gay icon, saying “I never want my music to be for anyone.”
