Noel Fielding is facing a backlash after posting a photo of himself with Great British Bake Off co-host Paul Hollywood.

Fielding, who took over as a host from Mel and Sue after GBBO moved from the BBC to Channel 4, posted the photo to his Twitter page.

He wrote: “This should put to rest any rumours that me and blue eyes @PaulHollywood don’t get on ? ha ha ha x.”

It showed the two appearing to jokingly simulate anal sex.

But not everyone saw the funny side.

A number of Twitter users responded to Fielding’s post to say that the joke was made in poor taste and was offensive.

Some accused Fielding of homophobia and making a joke of gay sex.

One Twitter user wrote: “Gay sex isn’t there for your cheap & nasty humour… Rethink your attitude, please*…. *I’ve responded more patiently than most might.”

While a second added: “Straight guys pretending to be gay HAHAHAHAHAHA…. How did you guys think of something so hilarious?”

And a third said: “Mmmmmmmmmmmmmm homophobia”.

Another wrote: “Steady on guys, This is a family show!!”

Many, however, defended the hosts and said they simply wanted to know where Fielding got his shirt from.

Rainbow cakes were at the heart of a new ad campaign by the Great British Bake Off after the show faced backlash last year when it was accused of sexism.

The British show faced criticism in 2016 as the contestants were announced holding bowls of icing that seemingly marked their gender (females held pink icing, while males held blue).

Wraths of viewers accused the former BBC produced show of using the gendered colours unnecessarily.

However, the show has since controversially moved to Channel 4 and the new promo is much more inclusive with its rainbow cake-themed announcement of the contestants.

The contestants were announced on Twitter and the show has been applauded for the diverse mix.

One person wrote: “6 men 6 women. Tick. Cultural diversity. Tick.”

Liam, Stacey, Yan, Steven, Tom, Flo, Kate, Julia, James, Chris, Sophie and Peter will all be competing in the new season.

GBBO fans seem to have welcomed the show’s comeback, despite favourites Mel & Sue and Mary Berry would not be working on the Channel 4 version.

The hosts have been replaced by Noel Fielding and Sandi Toksvig.

Cookery writer Prue Leith has replaced beloved judge Mary Berry, who bowed out when the show left the BBC. Chef Paul Hollywood is returning.
