Doctor Who star Billie Piper has said her character would still be in love with the new, female Doctor.

Piper appeared as companion Rose Tyler on the hit BBC series – on and off – from 2005 to 2013, with the ninth and tenth Doctors, Christopher Eccleston and David Tennant.

The show has made history over the past year, firstly bycasting Broadchurch star Jodie Whittaker as the new Doctor.

Broflakes were not happy with that news.

And that was after it had already revealed that in the new series, Pearl Mackie would play Bill Potts, the show’s first ever gay companion.

But Piper, speaking at Canadian fandom convention Fan Expo and US pop culture convention Dragon Con this weekend, said her character would have beaten Bill to the punch.

Fans at Dragon Con reported that she had told them straight out that if Rose were the current Doctor’s companion, she’d be just as smitten with her.

One fan, Beth Lindly, wrote: “Billie Piper just said that Rose would still be in love with the Doctor in the new incarnation (as in, a LADY) and I’m SCREAMING!!!!”

Cammien Ray‏, another diehard fan, tweeted separately: “.@billiepiper told me that Rose would absolutely be in love with the new female doctor. ”

And a third wrote: “billie piper said rose is in love with all incarnations of the doctor ROSE TYLER IS BISEXUAL AND IN LOVE WITH JODIE FOSTER CONFIRMED”.

There’s a chance she might have meant Jodie Whittaker – but who knows.

Speaking in response to a fan’s question at Fan Expo, Piper delved further into what she thought about the nature of the Doctor and companion’s relationship.

“If they’re going to change the world and travel through time, they’re gonna have to have a strong allegiance,” she explained.

“I think this is just the beginning of something really exciting.

“It’s not gonna be traditional. It’s gonna be modern and progressive,” she said about the new Doctor having female companions.

“But it will always be about needing each other, regardless of whether the doctor is a girl or a guy or a cat, y’know.

“It’s always going to be a beautiful union.”

People were overjoyed with Piper’s remarks.
