The equal marriage campaign in Australia has released an ad featuring mums who will battle to secure the right to marriage equality for their kids.

Next month Australians will be asked to vote on whether same-sex couples deserve the right to marriage, in a controversial public postal vote pushed forward by Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull.

Ahead of the vote the Coalition for Marriage, the collective of anti-LGBT activists that is opposing the move, put out a surreal ad featuring mothers claiming that gay weddings will lead to little boys being forced to wear dresses in public.

The ad was much-ridiculed online – and Australian Marriage Equality hit back today with their own ad featuring mothers.

In the Equality Campaign ad, a number of proud mums explain why they want their kids to have the right to marry whoever they want.

One expectant mum says: “We really want our baby to be born in an Australia that sees everyone as equal and marriage equality is a really good way to start.”

Another mother adds: “I love all my kids unconditionally. As long as they’re happy and that’s what we all should have and that’s what we all should want for our children.”

One mum is fighting for her gay son’s right to marry.

She says: “Having a gay son, as a mum I want him to be included in this world. He deserves all of the things that I’ve had. I’ve been happily married for 25 years. He deserves exactly that and he should no longer be excluded.”

Another mum added: “When I think about our children, marriage equality is absolutely vital so that they understand that, whoever they end up with, they can choose to get married and their community will recognise their commitment.”

We certainly know which group of mums we think deserve a round of applause.

It comes as the group laid into the Coalition for Marriage over their attempts to blur equal marriage with other issues.

Tiernan Brady, Executive Director of the Equality Campaign, said: “The people behind [the Coalition for Marriage] ad know that Australians believe everyone should have the same opportunity to marry, so they are deliberately resorting to misleading people.

“Sadly, the Australian people will now hear a daily dose of red herrings and dishonesty served up by a huge bucket of cash.

“Marriage Equality can be a unifying moment for our nation as we move to include all Australians in our marriage laws.”

Alex Greenwich of The Equality Campaign added: “Marriage Equality is about the commitment shared between two people who love each other and want to build a secure future together. Every Australian should be treated equally under the law.

“We call on everyone to remember that marriage equality is about real people. It’s about members of our families, our friends, neighbours, work colleagues and teammates who simply want the same status and dignity as their fellow Australians.”

Tiernan Brady added: “Despite such provocation we remain committed to a respectful campaign of conversations. We would remind those behind this ad and all who engage in this national conversation that words can inflict real damage to people.

“As they strive to divide Australians, we will campaign to unite them.”
