RuPaul hints that Willow Smith might play her in 80’s biopic
RuPaul has revealed that Willow Smith might play her drag persona in an upcoming biopic about the performer set in the 1980’s.
Speaking to Page Six, the drag queen of the world revealed that a TV movie about her life was in the works, although no official decision had been made as yet.
RuPaul explained that after years of hard work in the drag world, and popularising drag performers through the show Drag Race, he was finally being recognised.
He explained: “I’ve had eight nominations. And won an Emmy last year. People are finally catching on to me.”
“But wait. Next is a TV movie about me.
“Not filmed yet. No title yet. Not cast yet. I won’t play me. It’s maybe Willow Smith,” Ru said.
Speaking about Smith potentially playing her, RuPaul said that he wanted a good balance of sass and sweetheart.
“At least she’s a biological female. And I don’t need someone bitchy. I’m not. I’m sassy. There’s a kindness in me. I’m really a sweetheart.”
He explained that the biopic was in the works and was being backed by J.J. Abrams.
“Networks are bidding on the project now. A one-hour show is 42 minutes. A streaming service is an hour. Until we know which, we haven’t started shooting. J.J. Abrams is behind it.”
Speaking about her work, RuPaul added that there was a “political” side to drag and that he was proud he could represent a forward thinking America.
“There’s a political aspect to looking at what I do. My show represents the fair shake, the promise of America we all hoped for.
“It’s all about identity. Everyone can be famous. This represents that you can create your own persona. I never expected validation or some form of status quo. There’s no template for what I do,” he added.
The drag star recently faced unprecedented homophobia as he announced that he wed his partner after being with him for 23 years.
Pictures emerged of the RuPaul’s Drag Race host with his long-term partner, Georges LeBar.
Mr LeBar, a Wyoming rancher, had managed to stay out of the public eye for 23 years before the pair were snapped by paparazzi together.
