We’re obsessed with the US politician who is ‘reclaiming’ her time

A US congresswoman has become the ultimate sass icon over the weekend after a video of her talking at a congressional hearing went viral.

Democrat Maxine Waters shut down the Treasury secretary, Steven Mnuchin, in an exchange that has since gone viral.

Waters was grilling Mnuchin on the recent Russia and Trump scandal when he tried to filibuster her with his answer.

The congresswoman had asked Mnuchin why he had not responded to a letter she had sent on May 23.

Mnuchin begins to thank Waters for her service to Congress among other compliments, but Waters bites back.

“Reclaiming my time! Reclaiming my time,” she says coolly.

Mnuchin is aghast, and a little offended, sparking a heated back and forth between the two.

The chairman of the hearing explains that Waters, who serves as the U.S. Representative for California’s 43rd congressional district, is allowed to “reclaim” her time – meaning that Mnuchin must answer her questions with straight forward answers.

“Mr Chairmen, I thought when you read the rules you acknowledged that I shouldn’t be interrupted,” Mnuchin said.

Waters retorted: “What he failed to tell you is when you’re on my time I can reclaim it, he left that out so I’m reclaiming it.”

“Perhaps Mr chairman I don’t understand the rules because I thought was allowed to answer questions,” Mnuchin added.

“Would you please explain the rules and not take that away from my time,” Waters replied.

The hilarious and brilliant sass of Waters outright not having any time for Mnuchin’s attempt to dance around her questions has been celebrated online.

RuPaul retweeted a clip of the video, writing “YES AUNTIE”.

The host of Billy on the Street, Billy Eichner, wrote: “MY NEW DREAM BILLY ON THE STREET GUEST: MAXINE WATERS”.

Transgender activist Raquel Willis added: “‘Reclaiming my time’ is my new catchphrase!”

Waters made other headlines over the weekend as she wrote on Twitter suggesting that Mike Pence would soon be President with the help of Sean Spicer and Reince Priebus.

Spicer, the former Press Secretary, and Priebus, the former Chief of Staff, have left their positions within the White House in the last week.

Waters wrote: “Mike Pence is somewhere planning an inauguration. Priebus and Spicer will lead the transition.”
