Love Island could be getting a lesbian spin-off
Sexy reality TV show Love Island could be set to spawn a lesbian spin-off.
The third season of the programme’s current incarnation has been incredibly successful for ITV.
Its ITV2 channel has attracted increasingly large amounts of viewers to the coupling show, as well as a vociferous following on social media.
The Mallorca-based programme has broken through into the national consciousness, reflected by it achieving its highest viewing figures of the season on Sunday, at 2.76 million.
And the massively increased popularity has led to showrunners to consider creating a lesbian version, according to the Daily Star.
Last year, Love Island featured its first same-sex couple, as late entrant Katie Salmon split up straight pairing Sophie Gradon and Tom Powell by choosing Sophie in a recoupling.
The pair outlasted Tom, but fell before the final hurdle.
And now, producers are reportedly ready to spring a similar surprise at the end of this season, which 11 days left.
Any entry of lesbian contestants would form a trial run for a potential lesbian spin-off, according to the Daily Star.
A source told the outlet: “The heterosexual couples this year have been amazing entertainment.
“But there is a feeling among producers that there could be more representation of the LGBT community.
“In 2017, they know they can’t go on forever pretending the gay community doesn’t exist.
“It’s only a matter of time,” they added.
The move would follow Blind Date featuring its first ever lesbian coupling last weekend, with the Channel 5 programme also planning an episode including a gay pairing later this year.
Safe to say, a lesbian Love Island would be well-received by fans.
