Demi Lovato hits back at Halsey over claims she’s using bisexuality to sell records

Demi Lovato has clapped back after Halsey threw some heavy shade at the singer for using bisexuality “as a taboo”.

Halsey, who is openly bi, was speaking to PAPER Magazine about the difficulties faced by fans looking to celebrate bisexuality in their music.

The star said it was “just a shame that it’s so hard for marginalised or minority people to get the same pop music experience as people who are heterosexual or generally part of the majority.”

She has nailed her colours to the mast with some beautiful bisexual love songs and videos, including Now Or Never, Ghost and Strangers, which she sang with Fifth Harmony star Lauren Jauregui.

When asked whether part of the problem was the association between bisexuality and experimentation in popular culture, Halsey had a pointed response ready – with example lyrics.

“Oh, yeah. Bisexuality as a taboo,” she said.

“‘Don’t tell your mum,’ or ‘We shouldn’t do this,’ or ‘This feels so wrong but it’s so right.’

“That narrative is so f***ing damaging to bisexuality and its place in society,” she added.

“That’s something I’ve had to fight my whole life and something I still fight.”

Demi Lovato’s hit song Cool for the Summer contains the lines: “Don’t tell your mother / Kiss one another / Die for each other.”

She also sings: “Don’t be scared ’cause I’m your body type” and “Got a taste for the cherry / I just need to take a bite.”

The other lines which Halsey quotes appear to be references to Katy Perry’s I Kissed A Girl.

Demi wasn’t about to take this attack lying down, though.

She responded with an appropriately cool reply, pointing out the longevity of her creation.

“You know a song is a hit when people are still talking about the lyrics two years later. #shhhhdonttellyourmother” said the GLAAD award winner.

The singer has always refused to define her sexuality, saying last year: “It’s something I don’t think needs to have a label.

“As humans, it’s just about a connection with someone.”
