Scientists have been investigating why it is so many gay men like a guy with a beard.

There is lots of anecdotal evidence that more gay men have beards, but now there is some actual evidence.

The journal of Evolution and Human Behavior investigated the phenomena.

In a survey of 1,577 men and women from Brazil and the Czech Republic, gay men had stronger preferences for men with more facial hair.

The journal learned that men who have sex with men found people with “thicker facial hair” more attractive.

But when the study was repeated for women, the findings were not the same.

The second study found that men who were clean-shaven and those with a full beard were the less sexually attractive to women.

Meanwhile the sexiest men were those sporting heavy stubble, followed by short stubble.

Another finding suggested that, for gay men, guys with thicker facial hair make better longer-term partners.

But if you can’t grow a full beard, then don’t worry: guys are most commonly attracted to guys with similar levels of beard to themselves.

“When beardedness becomes too common, it is less attractive than when it is rare,” Dr Barnaby Dixson, from the University of Queensland, wrote.

“This may explain why fashions and trends in beardedness fluctuate over time.”

It’s not just guys who can grow beards, though.

Harnaam Kaur, 24, from Slough, Berkshire was named the youngest woman to have a full beard by Guinness World Records.

he body positivity campaigner maintains her beard as part of a journey to overcome bullying she dealt with in her younger years over her appearance.

“Now with a beard measuring as long as six inches in places, she overcame years of bullying to take ownership of her appearance and achieve this record title at the age of 24 years 282 days,” her record citation reads.

“I am super proud to hold this record,” Kaur wrote on Instagram.

“The inner child in me is so pleased. I grew up reading [The Guinness World Records book] – I even tried breaking some of my own records wanting to be in this book.

“It is amazing to be valued and celebrated being a Bearded Lady.”
