Katy Perry collaborates with ‘homophobic’ Migos weeks after receiving LGBT award
Fans have expressed their outrage after Katy Perry released a single with Migos, a rap group accused of homophobic remarks.
The song, Bon Appetit, has come out just six weeks after Perry was awarded Human Rights Campaign’s national equality award for her LGBT advocacy work.
In a speech to the audience in Los Angeles, the musician spoke about her own sexual experiences with women and the meaning behind her 2008 song I Kissed A Girl.
“I speak my truths and I paint my fantasies into these little bite-size pop songs,” she said.
“For instance, ‘I kissed a girl and I liked it.’ Truth be told, I did more than that.”
The star went on to say that she had struggled with her sexuality and balancing it with religion, to the extent that she tried to “pray the gay away in my Jesus camps”.
“My first words were ‘mama’ and ‘dada, ‘God’ and ‘Satan,’” she explained.
“When I was growing up, homosexuality was synonymous with the word ‘abomination’ … and hell.
“A place of gnashing of teeth, continual burning of skin and probably Mike Pence’s ultimate guest list for a barbecue. No way, no way. I wanted the pearly gates and unlimited fro-yo toppings.”
Last month, Migos members said that rapper Makonnen coming out was proof “the world is f***ed up,” adding: “This world is not right”.
These remarks predictably sparked a backlash.
Migos then issued a clarification and an apology, saying: “We always been about being original and staying true.
“We are all fan’s of Makonnen’s music and we wish he didn’t feel like he ever had to hide himself.
“We feel the world is fucked up that people feel like they have to hide and we’re asked to comment on someone’s sexuality.
“We have no problem with anyone’s sexual preference. We love all people, gay or straight, and we apologise if we offended anyone.”
Nevertheless, people were quick to express their disgust with an honoured LGBT ally pairing up with a band they called “homophobic”.
Reason 363718 why I hate Katy Perry: She claims to love the gays yet featured an openly homophobic rapper on her new single ???
