Judge on RuPaul opens up about shutting down Milo Yiannopoulos

Meka Beresford March 18, 2017

Television personality Ross Mathews has opened up about getting revenge on Milo Yiannopoulos after the right-wing figure head tried to shame Mathews for being “flamboyant”.

The RuPaul’s Drag Race judge, who came to fame as “Ross the Intern” on the Tonight Show, was targeted by Yiannopoulos when he publicly said: “I get emails from mothers sometimes and they say ‘my son is gay and I was terrified that he was going to turn into Ross Mathews’.”

Mathews felt compelled to respond to the negative remark and set precedent for young LGBT people.

He explained that he was proud to be “the antithesis” of Yiannopoulos, but knew that he had to respond quickly.

The Chelsea Lately guest hose decided not to talk to a publicist about approaching the matter, rather he just hit record and “put the results out into the ether”.

In the video Mathews stressed that being “flamboyant or different” does not mean you should be “considered ‘less than’.”

He goes on to say that he is “unapologetically himself”, and that Yiannopoulos can say anything because he is “proud of who I am, even if it’s different”

Matthews said that he is proud to be an example for kids who are trying to find their identity, but he’s worried that kids who “feel that they’re different” will see Yiannopoulos’ negativity.

He finished the video off saying that his own mother was “proud”.

The video has since been watched nearly 3 million times since it was posted in February, and Mathews has said that he has received an outpour of positive feedback.

“I’ve read every single email, every single tweet and I’m so grateful,” he told GSN. “But it is not about me, it’s not why I made the video. I didn’t ask to be in this conversation and I don’t want it to be about me. I’m just glad that that message is getting out to the kids that they’re fine just the way they are.”

“The divine came through that day honey. Anyone who’s been there knows exactly what I was talking about.”
