This awesome dad got his daughter a rainbow umbrella for the most amazing reason

March 7, 2017

A teenager has shared the heartfelt reason her father bought her a rainbow umbrella.

Nevaeh Sotelo, 15, recently came out as a lesbian to her friends and family.

She says she was very nervous for taking the big step, unsure of how people would react.

But it wasn’t just good, it was amazing.

Ms Sotelo told BuzzFeed News: “I came out as lesbian October 21, 2015.

“It was really hard for me because I wasn’t too sure how much of my family would be accepting.”

But, she said, “after coming out, my dad has been one of my biggest supporters.”

Her father, Robert Sotelo, reacted by embracing his daughter and telling her how much she is loved.

He then went out and bought her a bright, rainbow coloured umbrella as a gift.

“My dad is a strong believer in equality, as am I”, she continued.

“He knows that everyone should be treated with the same respect no matter your gender, sexuality, race, or anything in between.

“He definitely is brave. He’s not afraid to speak up about things either.”

Mr Sotelo, a retired veteran, says it’s so important to him that his daughter knows she can be whoever she wants.

“I bought it for her because I know at her age it’s hard to be accepted in this cruel world we live in and not one moment do I want my daughter to forget that her dad loves her no matter what.

“I want her to know on those stormy and rainy days as she’s holding up that umbrella that I am there to protect her just like the umbrella is there to protect her from the rain.”

And that’s not all – the message with the umbrella was just perfect for the situation.

Her dad said that the umbrella and its message “represents who my daughter is: a kind and loving individual who expresses herself no matter who is looking and because she is aware of who she is, and so am I.”

Such love!
