Former NBA star filmed ‘joking’ he would avoid going to a gym with a gay teammate (VIDEO)

A former NBA star who currently plays basketball in Israel has been filmed making a homophobic ‘joke’.

Amar’e Stoudemire, who was fined while at the NBA for using homophobic slurs, made the comment during an interview posted on an Israeli website.

Various American players in the Israeli basketball are asked in the clip whether they would have a problem with a gay teammate.

One other player says: “As long as he didn’t mess with me”, while Stoudemire goes even further, launching into a “joke”.

He says: “I’m going to shower across the street, make sure my change of clothes are around the corner, and I’m going to drive… take a different route to the gym.”

At the end of the comments, when asked whether it was a joke, he smiles.

Before adding: “I mean, there’s always a truth within a joke.”

The interview was uploaded by journalist Raphael Gellar and uploaded to YouTube.

Back in 2012, Stoudemire, then a power forward and centre player for the New York Knicks, was fined $50,000 for calling a fan a “fag”.

He did apologise and the fan took to Twitter to say he had forgiven the star.
