Muslim Mayor of London Sadiq Khan says Trump ‘can’t silence me’

The Mayor Of London has said President Trump “can’t silence me” in a mass rally in Trafalgar Square.

Sadiq Khan was speaking at a screening of The Salesman, a new film by Muslim director Asghar Farhadi.

Mr Farhadi, who won his second Academy Award at this year’s Oscars, boycotted the ceremony after the ban on people from seven Muslim-majority countries from entering the United States was introduced.

Mayor Khan told a crowd of 10,000 in central London: “President Trump can’t silence me!” to cheers.

He added: “We stand in solidarity with all those who are discriminated against because of their nationality, their faith or their background.

“At a time when people are talking about travel bans, I want to welcome people.

“At a time when people are motivating communities to divide, I want to unite them.”

President Trump previously called Mr Khan “ignorant” and “rude” after he spoke out against the then candidate’s plans for office.

Khan hit back saying Trump is playing into the hands of ISIS with his anti-Muslim rhetoric..

In a recorded video message, Mr Farhadi told the mass screening of the film: “Despite our different religions, cultures and nationalities, we are all citizens of the world.”

Mayor Khan organised the free screening with actors Keira Knightley, Dominic West, and Lily Cole in protest at Trump’s “extreme vetting”.

The Mayor of London has previously backed calls for opposite-sex couples to be able to enter civil partnerships, which are currently restricted to gay couples.
