George Michael’s family initially didn’t want a Grammys tribute to the late star.

Adele revealed the truth behind her emotional tribute in a new newspaper interview.

She told the Sunday People: “They didn’t want a tribute at first – his family and camp – and then they came back and were very specific that it be me.

“I said, ‘Great, I have got something in the pipeline.

“If you want me to do it, I will do it.’”

The star went on to move the 59th Grammys to tears with her slowed down version of his song Fastlove.

However when things didn’t go to plan, Adele, 28, cursed and asked for the music to be stopped suddenly.

“I can’t mess this up for him!” she said, requesting the song be started again.

“I know it’s live TV, but I’m sorry I need to start again,” she said.

No doubt the disruption was a major headache for organisers, who had commercials to go to and a TV slot to fit in.

But the song was re-started, as Adele gave a deeply moving, slowed down rendition of the song, bringing many to tears.

In spite of the slip-up, she received a standing ovation from the crowd.

George Michael died on Christmas Day 2016, aged 53.

Despite that, he is expected to remain unburied for 13 weeks.

His boyfriend has since told how he tried to wake him up for a whole hour after finding him dead at home.

George Michael had been a huge fan of Adele.

He previously turned up at the BRIT Awards for the first time in 17 years to give her the Best Album award in 2012.
