Sir Elton John is working on a musical version of The Devil Wears Prada, it has been announced.

The new musical will come off the back of the 2006 classic comedy film, which starred Meryl Streep as high-powered fashion magazine boss Miranda Priestly, and Anne Hathaway as her young assistant.

Legendary musician Sir Elton John has worked on a number of acclaimed musical adaptations in the past, including The Lion King and Billy Elliot the Musical.

In a statement he said he is “excited” to start work on the new project alongside collaborator Paul Rudnick.

Sir Elton said: “Re-imagining The Devil Wears Prada for the musical theater is super exciting. I’m a huge fan of both the book and the feature film and a huge aficionado of the fashion world.

“I can’t wait to sink my musical teeth into this hunk of popular culture.”

Rent producer Kevin McCollum is helming the project.

He said: “To bring The Devil Wears Prada to the stage, we knew we needed to find artists as inimitable as the characters in the story.

“We needed artists whose work has run the gamut from music and publishing to drama and fashion. We could think of only two names: Elton John and Paul Rudnick. That’s all!”

The product is early in production, with no date announced for its theatrical run.

Sir Elton previously teased a number of undisclosed theatre projects last year when discussing rumours that he would retire to spend more time with his family.

He said: “I’m working on a musical, but I can’t tell you about that yet… and then I’m working on another musical after.”

“Obviously I work – but the work will get less and less and I’ll spend more time with my children growing up.

“And that’s what I want to do, I’ll gradually phase things out in a few years. It’s not forever but I want to see my kids grow up. I go all over the world. I just don’t want to tour so much.

“At the moment, it’s just about when the boys are out of school and how much we can spend with them.”
