Hockey star perfectly calls out fan over homophobic abuse

A Canadian ice hockey star perfectly challenged a fan who sent him a homophobic message.

Brad Marchand plays left wing for National Hockey League team the Boston Bruins.

The team faced off against the Buffalo Sabres last night, with the Bruins scoring a 4-2 win.

The news didn’t go down well with one Sabres fan, who took to Twitter to send abuse to Marchand.

The Twitter user wrote: “Put [Bruins captain] Chara’s dick back in your mouth you fucking fag.”

Rather than stoop to the level of the person who sent the abuse, Marchand shared it – adding: “This derogatory statement is offensive to so many people around the world. [You’re] the kind of kid parents are ashamed of.”

When the Twitter user attempted to delete their message, Marchand shared a screenshot, adding: “[You’re] not getting off that easy bud.”

The sport has seen other crackdowns on homophobia in the past.

Earlier this year, a player faced a one-match ban after footage emerged of him shouting homophobic slurs at a referee.

Andrew Shaw of the Chicago Blackhawks after getting sent off while playing against the St Louis Blues. Cameras captured him shouting ‘F**k you, you f**king faggot!’ at the referee.

NHL Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly said at the time: “Hopefully it will be an eye-opening response for everyone involved in the league and in our game.

“As a league, we stand for tolerance and inclusion. We cannot and will not tolerate public commentary or behaviour by league or club personnel that is antithetical to those values.”
