The holiday cups at McDonald’s have caused a storm of controversy on Twitter as some suggest they contain a lewd image.

The red cups released for the McDonald’s McCafe range of hot drinks, seemingly contains a simple image of two white mittens on its red design.

But despite the image, which is accompanied by a ‘Warmest Greetings’ message, some have pointed out something which cannot be unseen in the image.

Sam Sykes, a fantasy author, took to Twitter to suggest that the image looks like a man spreading his butt cheeks.

His version of the cup on which he has drawn tiny hands, has been retweeted more than 14,000 times.

Other similar images have circulated on Reddit.

“Now how the hell are Starbucks cups in the news again and no one’s talking about a guy spreading his cheeks open on McDonald’s cups,” wrote Sykes.

Most people have basically said that they cannot unsee the altered design.

One follower tweeted back at Skyes to say: “Whoa, that is exactly the first thing I saw. I can’t unsee it. What is it supposed to be??”

In an exchange that followed, it appeared that Sykes was unable to see that the design was intended to represent mittens.

A statement from a McDonald’s spokesperson said that they “festive McCafe cups” design does not feature a hidden message.

He said “the altered image circulating on social media is the result of someone getting a little cheeky and adding some hand-drawing to a cup.”
