Trump’s national security pick outed gay brother while he was dying of AIDS
Donald Trump’s Deputy National Security Advisor outed her brother to their own mum while he was dying of AIDS, according to a 2006 report.
Kathleen Troia “KT” McFarland wrote a letter to her mother saying that her brother, Michael Troia, was a “lifelong homosexual” before he died of AIDS in 1995.
KT also allegedly refused to let her gay brother meet her children.
“Have you ever wondered why I have never had anything to do with Mike and have never let my daughters see him although we live only fifteen minutes away from each other?” McFarland reportedly wrote in a letter to their mother, without her brother’s permission.
“He has been a lifelong homosexual, most of his relationships brief, fleeting one-night stands.”
Announcing her appointment, Trump said he was “proud that KT has once again decided to serve our country and join my national security team,” and cited her “tremendous experience”.
It comes after Trump appointed the head of university that bans gay students to his cabinet, and made a woman who funded anti same-sex marriage campaigns education secretary.
The revelations surfaced in a profile piece for New York Times Magazine in 2006, where it’s reported the now Trump adviser said she “couldn’t abide” her brother being gay.
Advisers to Mrs McFarland thought her comments would look homophobic, and so arranged a second interview with the magazine to present a different picture.
Mrs McFarland said that her father beat and whipped his children, and would sometimes threaten to kill the whole family with a gun in his hand.
Her other brother, Tom Troia, told the New York Post the allegations of abuse were “a complete fabrication”, saying: “If I had one word to describe my sister, it would be ‘evil.’”
When her father was approached about the allegations he profusely denied them.
According to the New York Times, McFarland said her brother was often sick during the 1990s and would visit him at his home or the hospital, but she cut off contact with him during the last two years of his life.
In 2006 mrs McFarland attempted to run against Hillary Clinton for the New York Senate seat, but lost the Republican nomination after her daughter was held on criminal charges.
Gregory Angelo from Log Cabin Republicans, the GOP’s LGBT wing, defended Mrs McFarland speaking to Washington Blade.
“Log Cabin Republicans opposes outing, and always has,” Angelo said.
“Beyond that, family matters should be left to families to work out. All I can say is that my interactions with KT over the years — and there have been many, from my time as chairman of Log Cabin Republicans of New York State to CPAC to today — have always shown me KT supports a big-tent approach to politics.”
