McDonald’s restaurant pays out $103k after man was allegedly fired for being HIV-positive

McDonald’s has settled in a discrimination case over allegations that an employee was sacked for being HIV-positive.

The McDonald’s restaurant, owned and operated by Matthews Management Co. and Peach Orchard Inc in Bentonville, Arkansas, agreed to pay $103,000.

It faced accusations of discrimination after a man says he was sacked after management found out he is HIV-positive.

The US Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC), announced that the restaurant would pay out to settle the case.

“EEOC remains committed to protecting employees from disability discrimination on the job,” says regional attorney of the EEOC’s Mephis District Office Faye A Williams.

“EEOC commends the companies for working with us to quickly resolve this matter prior to trial.”

The company was charged with having illegal business practices after allegedly having a policy of requiring employees to declare all prescription medications.

The EEOC notes that such conduct is in violation of the Americans with Disabilities Act.

34 McDonald’s restaurants are owned and operated by Matthews Management Co.
