A groundbreaking new Channel 4 documentary looks at issues faced by kids and the treatment of complex issues.

The first episode of Kids on the Edge features children who attend the Tavistock Gender Identity Development Service (GIDS), the only NHS-funded gender identity service for young people in the UK.

Children who feel they were born into the wrong gender, or those who do not identify with the binary genders will be the subject of the first episode.

It looks at the consequences of living with gender dysphoria, as well as the impact it can have on young people as well as their parents.

The GIDS clinic has seen a 100 percent increase in referrals in the past year, the documentary makers note.

Transitions and medical interventions are also explored in the series.

Directed by BAFTA-winning Peter Beard, the episode follows the daily lives of two transgender kids, as well as their families, throughout their treatment at GIDS.

Kids on the Edge first shows on Wednesday 16 December at 10pm on Channel 4.
