Kesha urges fans to reject Donald Trump and protect LGBT rights

Kesha has urged her fans to vote for Hillary Clinton over Donald Trump in an attack on his anti-LGBT policies.

The singer spoke out in a video this week, in a bid to make sure people turn out to vote on November 8 next month.

In the clip, she rallies against Republican attacks on LGBT rights nationally, and the passage of anti-trans laws North Carolina.

In a bid to attract support from evangelicals, Trump has claimed he would “consider” appointing ultra-conservative Supreme Court justices to repeal equal marriage, come  out in favour of North Carolina’s anti-trans law, and confirmed he would sign a Republican-backed bill to directly permit religious homophobic discrimination – while his running mate Mike Pence has confirmed he would dismantle Barack Obama’s protections for LGBT people.

Kesha said: “For me equality is everything. In this election especially you’re choosing between someone who’s promising to build walls and someone who’s hopeful. If those are my two options, I definitely want to go with hope.

“I’m in the fight with you. I don’t care if I’m not gay, I’m in the fight. I could never imagine punishing someone for loving someone of whatever sex. Love is love, period.”

“I personally have married two of my friends that are same-sex couples.

“Why on earth do you need to take that right away from these people? What is that going to do for you? It makes me sicks, and makes me really sad.”

She added: “We as a country do not need to step backwards. We need to protect the laws that have been groundbreaking, that have been stepping in the correct direction.

“It’s bigger than who is sitting in the White House – in a place like North Carolina, it’s very important you go out and vote, because the rights the LGBT people have just barely had could get taken away. If you live in North Carolina, it’s up to you to go vote, and be a part of repealing this absurd law.”

She concludes: “I’m Kesha and I vote to protect equal rights for every human being.”
