Cisgender male actor Jeffrey Tambor has used his Emmys acceptance speech for playing a transgender character to call out Hollywood on not using more trans actors.

Tambor, who plays trans character Maura Pfefferman in Amazon Prime’s ‘Transparent’, won his second Emmy last night for the role.

He used his acceptance speech to say it is problematic that cisgender actors are often cast in transgender roles.

Urging Hollywood producers to give trans actors a chance, he said: “I would not be unhappy were I the last cisgender male to play a transgender character on television.”

Amazon Prime has released the trailer for the upcoming season of Transparent.

The hit US show returns September 23 – and it seems the Pfeffermans are as gloriously dysfunctional as ever.

Jeffrey Tambor stars as a trans woman Maura in the Amazon series – which focusses on a parent coming out to their children and transitioning later in life.

The latest series opens with a birthday party for Maura, who has some news for her family.

“One of the things I wished for is that you don’t call me ‘moppa’ anymore. I thought you guys could start calling me ‘mom.’”

The series looks set to explore the latest chapter of the family’s journey, as the Pfeffermans continue on their various journeys for self-discovery.

“When one person in a family transitions, everyone transitions,” Shelley (Judith Light) says in the clip, teasing the drama ahead for the acclaimed series.

We also see Maura contemplate gender reassignment surgery and the family come together for a family cruise to Mexico.

New addition Anjelica Huston also returns as Maura’s love interest – however, there was no sign of rumoured guest star Caitlyn Jenner, who is expected to pop up in a fantasy sequence.

The show has become a cult hit and one of Amazon’s biggest shows, with Tambor winning Best Actor at the Screen Actors Guild awards earlier this year.

The cast of the show were also invited to a trans reception at the White House last year, with Obama’s staff holding a special screening of the show to celebrate equality.

And fans of the show need not worry – it has already been confirmed for a fourth outing.

Transparent Season Three premieres Friday, September 23.
